These are the responses that we received from some of the workshops that were attended by grades 5 and 6 classes within the York Region.
Awareness
Things that we SHOULD do: Open our minds and educate people around us/Help someone! you never know where that act of kindness will go/ Spread awareness about our environment to schools or the community.
Things that we COULD do:Write an article/Spread awareness about our environment to the school or the community/Give presentations on these issues/Make posters around your neighbourhood/Talk to someone/Make commercials and previews to air on movies or on T.V/Go door to door and spread awareness/Begin each day with global issues so teachers and students are more aware of problems and challenges that exist/Read and pay attention to articles in the paper or magazines that you may normally not pay attention too.
Poverty
Things that we SHOULD do:We need homeless shelters/Donate food when you can/Donate money.
Things that we COULD do: Try to save up and give to different countries/Start a food bank/Sponsor children if you can /Break the cycle of poverty by educating families on how to use resources that are available/Donate old toys or clothing so families do not have to buy that stuff if they cannot afford it/Sell anything that you do not need or want/Have a drive to collect necessities and other small items(such as toys) for homeless shelters.
Food Production
Things we SHOULD do:Don’t waste food/If you have existing food don’t throw it in the garbage, put it in the food bank/Make sure that all your food is not expired/ Don’t eat to many treats and eat healthy things/Don’t pollute so food production is not started/Keep the environment clean/Eat only what you need and only buy the absolute essentials/Sustainable development/Eat what you touch- remember the 3 second rule/Keep the environment clean.
Things we COULD do:Donate money to food banks/Try growing vegetables and fruit.
War
Things we SHOULD do:Don’t fight.Talk it over/Don’t use bombs or injure cities or countries/Stop fighting and make peace/Stay in the land that you have and accept everyone’s differences/Don’t be greedy when it comes to land/People should be able to discuss issues in a mature matter way and shouldn’t fight over it/Since we have been having war for so long,my saying is that “ if you don’t remember your past you’ll make the same mistake in the future”/Instead of war talk it out.
Things we COULD do: Make peace treaties/Write a letter to the mayor to contact other mayors about this issue.
Ignorance and Education
Things we SHOULD do: Send useful items to the people that need help/ Educate people/Donate money to build homes, schools and hospitals.
Things we COULD do:Donate money, school supplies etc which will help to send more people to school and help build more buildings/Send school supplies that you do not need/Start a fundraiser that could help build schools and give school supplies/Send pencils and papers to Africa/People can go to other countries to teach.
Racial Prejudice
Things we SHOULD do: Go and make friends with people who don’t have friends- no matter what color they are/Be fair let everybody play – not just white people etc/Co-operation not competition/Find similarities instead of differences/Respect everyone instead of putting people down/Don’t judge people by how they look. It's what on the inside that counts.
Things we COULD do: You could start a club and let everyone join.
Famine
Things we SHOULD do: Donate food/Don’t waste what we have instead enjoy it/Bring awareness to people/Appreciate what you have and don’t waste/Shareand donating food.
Things we COULD do:Create a school wide food bank/Fundraise in different ways to help/We can collect canned food and donate it.
Climate Change
Things we SHOULD do: Recycle and reuse/Pick up garbage and litter/Instead of using polluting vehicles,we could walk or bike to different places to reduce the pollution going into the world/Use reusable materials/Stop using electricity so there are less man made green gases.
Things we COULD do:We could walk instead of using a car to come to school/We can drive a hybrid car if you need to go far and ride a bike for short distances/Create a set time for how much T.V and how many hours of driving a car a person does. If someone goes over the limit they can get fined and the money would be donated to the scientists that are trying to stop global warming/Cut down the use ofappliances/Stop using warm water for washing, use cold water.
Disease
Things we SHOULD do: Take a shower/Stop pollution/Education/Pay for soap and water to have good hygiene to send off.

Welcome
Well, ACT III has come and gone. By all accounts it was a very successful day. Many thanks to those of you who sent emails of support for this initiative. Your words inspire all of us to carry on. Already we are beginning to plan for ACT IV in the spring of 2008. We hope to see you there!
Last Friday you were left with the challenge that when you return to your schools that you meet with your team and/or larger student leadership team to identify those global citizenship initiatives that you are already engaged in with the purpose of investigating the learning that results from and how you might expand on the initiative. Several of you indicated in your emails that you have already begun the process. This is fantastic news! As you begin this journey you are encouraged to share your understandings, successful practices and resources through this blog format so that we can all continue to benefit from ACT III throughout the upcoming year. Submitting a practice is as easy. Just email the document to stephen.rensink@yrdsb.edu.on.ca and it will be posted within a few days. Your comments on any of the postings are welcome as well. To comment click on the "comment" button at the bottom of the posting and follow the instructions from there.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
